AUSTIN, Texas – May 26, 2015 – Central Texans who have suffered damages as a result of recent rains and floods are encouraged to take advantage of free legal assistance from Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) for help with the legal issues they face as they rebuild their lives and their homes.
“Serious rain and flooding can trigger a variety of legal concerns,” said TRLA attorney Tracy Figueroa. “TRLA can help families navigate those issues so that they receive the support they need to recover.”
In the aftermath of the flooding, residents can encounter a variety of legal issues including denials of insurance claims, problems with a landlord or mortgage company, and price gouging. Residents may also need legal assistance to replace copies of important legal documents, protest their property taxes, or as they try to obtain disaster-related unemployment or public benefits such as food stamps, Medicaid, and Social Security.
Residents in need of legal help are encouraged to call TRLA’s toll-free disaster assistance hotline at 1-866-757-1570. The hotline is staffed Monday through Friday and features a voicemail system that allows callers to leave their information when lines are busy or calls are unanswered. TRLA staff will return calls as soon as possible. Additional legal resources are being posted online at www.trla.org/centexfloods.
“People do not need to go through this process alone,” added Figueroa. “TRLA is here to give Central Texans the legal support they need.”
