Get Help — Civil Legal Aid
TRLA provides free legal services to low-income people who need help with consumer fraud, housing problems, foreclosure, family law issues, disaster assistance, landlord-tenant conflicts, child custody arrangements, accessing public benefits, recovering unpaid wages, and many other civil legal problems. To qualify for our services, your must have a legal problem within our 68-county service area and meet the income, asset, and immigration requirements established by the U.S. Congress, the Texas Legislature, and other funding sources. The guidelines are complicated, but intake workers at our Texas Access to Justice (TAJ) hotline (888) 988-9996 can help you with the application process. The hotline takes calls from 8:30 am-7:30 pm Monday through Thursday and from 8:30 am-5:30 pm on Friday. We suggest trying in the evening when we get fewer calls. You can also fill out and submit an initial screening form for some forms of civil legal aid.
Online Screening Forms for Uncontested Divorces and Protective Orders
Please keep in mind that an online application is only the first step in TRLA’s intake process and does not mean that you are eligible for TRLA‘s legal services. TRLA will review the information submitted online and, if it appears to meet eligibility requirements, we will contact you to continue the application process. Please be patient and do not call to ask about the status of your online application. Because of TRLA’s limited resources, it may take a week or two to contact you.
Uncontested Divorces – Initial Screening for referral to our Uncontested Divorce Programs
(Submit this form to see if you may be eligible.)
Protective Orders – Initial Screening for a Protective Order
(Submit this form to see if TRLA may be able to help you get a protective order.)
Online Screening Form for Education Issues
Please keep in mind that an online application is only the first step in the intake process and doesn't mean you're eligible for TRLA legal services.
