How to Get Free Legal Aid in the Austin Area

TRLA’s Austin office provides free services to low-income people who need help with civil legal problems.To qualify for TRLA Austin’s services, you must have a legal matter within our service area (Bastrop, Blanco, Burnet, Caldwell, Hays, Llano, Mason, Travis, and Williamson counties). You must also meet the income, asset, and immigration requirements established by the U.S. Congress, the Texas Legislature, and other funding sources. Please call or apply in person with intake staff, who can help you through the process.

TAJ Hotline (888) 988-9996

Our Telephone Access to Justice (TAJ) hotline is designed to help you apply for any kind of free civil legal services from TRLA. Trained intake workers will walk you through the process of finding out if you are eligible for services. The hotline takes calls from 8 am-7:30 pm, Mon.-Thurs, and 8 am-5 pm, Friday. It is best to call in the evening when the lines are less busy.

You can call (8 am-5 pm, Mon.-Fri.) to make an appointment for a phone intake interview, if your legal problem involves the following:

  • Family law matters involving family violence;

  • Housing matters involving subsidized, affordable, or public housing;

  • Public benefits including SSI, veterans’ benefits, Medicaid, and SNAP:

  • Wills for people over 60 who do not own houses or real estate othern than their homes.

You can apply in person at the library (314 W. 11th St. Suite 140, Austin, 78741) for free services in specific legal areas:

  • Public and veterans’ benefits:
    9 am-1 pm Mondays.

  • Family law cases involving family violence:
    9 am-1 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays;

  • Housing help for tenants:
    9 am-1 pm Wednesdays.

  • Wills
    9 am-1 pm, Fridays

Southeast Health and Wellness Center (CommUnityCare)

You can apply in person 9 am-2:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Center (2901) Montopolis, Austin, 78741. However, we encourage people to call first for an appointment (512) 978-8525.

Volunteer Legal Services (VLS)

You can apply in person for legal representation or get limited legal counsel: 6 pm, Wednesdays at Webb Middle School (601 E. St. Johns Ave., Austin, 78752).
